Iraqi culture: Far from home and more than a war zone


The greater Chicago area is home to about 3,000 Iraqi refugees, according to the Iraqi Mutual Aid Society. In this edition of Medill Newsmakers Anass Al Bayati, immigration specialist at the Iraqi Mutual Aid Society, explains the struggles Iraqis face when they come to the U.S. Ali Al Makzohmy talks about his library-cafe project in Baghdad and how he hopes reading about Iraqi culture can be the key to convincing young Iraqis to remain in their country. Finally, Al Bayati and Mohamed Husain discuss how ethnic and religious groups influence Iraqi social identity.
